Royal Oakie is proud to celebrate its 10th Anniversary this year with a special compilation that pulls together greatest hits, lot gems, and sleeper classics from the back catalog, as well as a taste of upcoming releases that broaden the music family to new corners of the map.
When David Glasebrook started Royal Oakie Records in 2012 he just wanted to release his band’s album and help some friends get their music out there too. Back then he didn’t know that the label would go on to epitomize the sound of West Coast indie rock and develop a cult following around the world. Living in Santa Cruz, CA at the time, he was Inspired by a Louie and the Lovers song named after a local park; with a goal to always emphasize creativity, community, and good times he started the label. A move north to Oakland, CA two years later would find the label its long time home in San Francisco’s East Bay.
A lifelong musician and burgeoning record producer since his youth, Glasebrook pulled from his background in the DIY music world and devoted his skills to crafting evocative and exciting releases that always strive to capture the essence of what makes a musical artist unique, while simultaneously pushing boundaries building on their existing sound and. Often working closely with the artists in the studio as either a producer, mixer, mastering engineer, or musician, he prides himself with the hands-on approach the label takes to crafting high quality releases.
Early releases from Deep Ellum, Sparrows Gate, and Whiskerman established much of the label’s extended family. It was with Sugar Candy Mountain, a then unknown band from Oakland, that the label had its first great success. Releasing their second album “Mystic Hits”, the label helped the band reach an audience and develop an international following. The following years saw the label build on that success with releases from China, Zeb Zaitz, Oliver Ray, and more.
During the pandemic the label focused on releasing albums that experimented with building on their roots in West Coast psych, surf, and folk, including releases by Sandy’s, Pacific Range, Scott Ballew, and Evan Myall. Initially known to some as a psychedelic rock label and known to others as a rustic folk-rock label, Royal Oakie has defied those expectations by cementing it’s own signature that’s rooted not in any one specific sound, but in artistic integrity and warmly evocative music that recalls the laid back spirit of the 1970’s West Coast, the indie integrity of American DIY, and the high water mark of other producer led labels such as Atlantic, ECM, Blue Note, Dischord, and American Recordings.
